Lovingly nicknamed A-lok, Anandlok is the pioneer in celebrating Durgotsav among the Mayur Vihar phase-I housing societies — way back in 1988, with only 25 Bengali families.
Today, this puja is celebrated by 63 Bengali families, out of the 300-odd ones from different parts of India — irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
Over 80 percent of the work is done in-house. The ladies play an active role in organizing the puja — starting from collecting donations to managing the main puja to the cultural functions.
The idol sports the popular "Daaker Saaj" with craftworks of "shola". Young boys and girls stay up nights to decorate the mandap based on a theme. This year it is the World Cup Soccer ’98.
The local residents boast such diverse talents in every form of classical and folk arts that all their cultural programmes go fully packed every year — within less 10 percent of performers from outside.
Bengali, Hindi and English plays, folk dances of Gujarat, Kerala and Bihar, kavi sammelan, mime and magic shows, and a series of classical dance and instrumentals are major attractions of this years celebrations.
The committee also organises a wide array of cultural competitions which includes cooking, quiz, tug-of-war, and treasure hunt involving participants of all ages.
